Coron Island

Posted by admin On October - 11 - 2009

For me the most amazing place in the Philippines are the Palawan Islands. I stayed in Coron town and the people are simply lovely. The town is small and quite and I picked a typical Filipino house on stilts to stay – the Crystal Lodge. You really sleep in one of the houses over the water what has it typical charm… I loved it.
The family was great and one day I bought a tuna to do Sashimi and I had so much that I could share. The family invited me and gave me some mangrove crab instead and we laughed a lot… Will always remember that night.
Another day I shared a boat cruise with two french travelers I met. The cruise was around Coron Island and to the Kayangan Lake. we had several stops and in between it even started raining. Since I was already spoiled with Palau no much could impress me anymore in the Philippines. Then I saw the view of the top of the hill on the hike to Kayangan Lake and I have to admit  – it is amazing. This was worth climbing up. It put me a little off that even after paying the boat trip you had to pay for each spot they brought you and you get off the boat extra. Always keep that in mind. The lake was the most expensive place but the most worth it as well. Some of the spots are just nothing special. Just other beaches. I prefer then rather to stay longer at one beach than cruising to several ones and having not enough time to enjoy.

First impressions of Palau

Posted by admin On August - 13 - 2009

In August I finally arrived in Palau to do my dive master training. I had heard a few things about it but not many people I knew and at this point nobody I knew has been traveled there before. It was very exciting. After me falling in love with Fiji and especially Nananu-I-Ra (Daydream Island) in 2006 I still was looking for a place comparable to my paradise. Something close to that and I have to admit so far on all my travels I could not find anything even close…. until visiting Ngemelis island in Palau.
What a pristine place – what a gemstone, a pearl of the pacific! Crystal-clear water surrounding that small island group close to the famous ‘Blue Corner’ dive site. Few years ago that island was only used by the chief family for holidays and now it is public. But it is about a 30min drive with boat from Koror and you barely see any people there ever. Maybe around lunch time few dive boats stop by and let their guest eat… Palau use to has the only intact reef people told me. They have the first and only shark sanctuary of the world. They take a fee for using their waters but therefore the Palauens also clean the beaches and reefs… It is definitely a garden Eden when you walk the empty soft beaches along the water watching the kingfisher and the paradise birds…. and then the sun touches your skin softly and you feel happy simply to be alive and to say thank you! After all amazing places I was lucky enough to visit this one is one of a kind –  a last true paradise and it is worth protecting! Read the rest of this entry »

The Blue Lagoon at Nanuya Lailai

Posted by admin On August - 2 - 2006

Today morning I went diving at the Blue Lagoon. The dive site was called ‘Tom’s Tumb’. I’ve heard that in this area are many dead corals and it is not worth to dive there. But I really wanted to know if that is true. And yes, it was. Its was too expensive (F$ 100 for one dive) and you will see less things alive and a big graveyard for corals, everything gray and demolished. But in 18m dept I found the most beautiful Kauri shell ever. After being back for lunch I produced a coconut bracelet. The Israelis left to Naviti where I want to go the next day for going diving at the ‘Manta Ray Resort’. I phoned immediately with ‘Coconut Bay Resort’ and there were still beds available (funny: two days ago they say it was booked out). In the afternoon I went with Lisa from California to the Blue Lagoon for snorkeling. In the evening I had some Kava and played some games. Could only take a few pictures since I only had some left on my quick snap cam… Too bad my SLR had dropped into the water and didn’t work…

Nanuya Lailai

Posted by admin On August - 1 - 2006

At 7:00am in the morning the shuttle to Denerau harbor picked me up. I was on my way to Nanuya Lailai one of the Yasawa islands. I was curious to see the Blue Lagoon (original from the movie ‘The Blue Lagoon’ with Brooke Shields). It takes about 4 hours with the Yasawa Flyer because this island is almost at the top of the Yasawas. I met Stacey from England. She was traveling alone as well and stayed at ‘Kim’s place’. I stayed at the ‘Sunrise Lagoon resort’. In my dorm apart from the Hungarian Peter there were eight Israelis. Never met so many in my life. There were fun but sometimes just to much. It was hard to sleep because they were that noisy. Together with Tom (one of the Israelian gang) I walked around the whole island. It’s beautiful but staying for two days is pretty much enough.

Walk the island…

Posted by admin On July - 23 - 2006

After Zoe, Aaron, Mark, Rosie and the girls left the island it felt more quiet than ever before. Not many people from the original crowd were left. Nathan, Simon, Simone and I decided to walk around the island. It took us about 3 1/2 hours for walking first to the millenium bure, then more further and after the mangroves down to the beach through the jungle. I arrived first at the beach and went straight into the water. Had done a vision my camera felt down into the water so I went back to the beach to save it. On this way back it happened, the camera dipped into the water. But it was not destroyed, just could not work properly anymore. What a shock! No photos anymore. Hopefully the others send me as much photos back… In the evening was beach party and I saw the first time in my life shooting stars. And about seven! That was very good after the stupid camera accident.
